i always thought he was a bit of a show off ponce laugh

  I reckon he's entitled to a bit of swagger.  Hard enough to win over an American opponent, in America...  virtually impossible to impress the judges after you've been knocked down.  To win, especially over someone as good as Hopkins, is a real achievement.
