After closing primary schools all over the place, forcing parents to drive their kids to school as the distances got greater and greater, the Welsh Assembly has now announced free transport for primary pupils who live over 2 miles from their new school.

Secondary pupils will still be expected to walk up to 3 miles to school and 3 miles back.

But the 2 and 3  miles are measured as a circle on a map..... not the road distance.

And they are banning double decker buses from the school route, and their 3-to-a-seat policy... and may even pay for escorts on the buses!!!

Plus, as of April 8th, tenants of private landlords have had strict limits set on how much rent will be paid by Housing Benefit... many will have to pay the difference themselves or move to cheaper/smaller accommodation. This could cause a rash of landlords losing their buy-to-let houses and flats when tenants move out to seek cheaper homes.

The amounts will vary month-by-month, and may well be applied to tenants of Council Housing soon. When/if it is applied to Council Housing, situations where an OAP is alone in a 3 bedroom house with 100% rent paid by Housing Benefit will become a thing of the past.

Granny on the tele earlier complaining... she rents from her grandson and presently gets 100% housing benefit... but I thought that was illegal? Huh

Another woman moved from close to a school to over 5 miles away... and still expects free transport to their original school as she doesn't want them to change teachers ....

not sure i agree with that.
There are a lot of old people who live alone in houses where they brought their families up, and the fear of loosing that home, and ending up in some residential home is often all that keeps them going.
I know a few old ladies, whos husbands and children have died/moved on and their house contains all the memories and sounds of decades. Most even struggle to heat and maintain their homes, some even stop using the upstairs, but at the end of the day it is where they have always lived.
Yes, I know 1 person in a three bedroom house is a waste.. but in a lot of cases the people who live in them have paid more than their dues into the system, they get shat on all the time and now they face residential care.
There aren't many 1 bed flats being built with affordable rent that aren't residential. These flats have to be ground floor, well built, affordable to the new housing benefit standard and built with the frail in mind with easy access and amenities.

My nan didn't mind moving into a flat with a warden, but then she walked out on her second husband so it wasn't a home that contained thousands of happy memories. The flats/bedsits she occupied where luckily ground floor and well built, but there were a lot of old people trapped on upper stories, without the ability to come down the often too steep stairs, whose only contact with the outside world was with visitors. It's horrendous and they deserve better. Cry

This isn't an neccesarily good thing either. Council/housing association houses, are hard to come by and private rents are much, much more expensive. It has the risk of putting more people into severe hardship.

We've been trying to move for the past 4+ years... we're still stuck here. Luckily the landlord hasn't the balls to put the rent up. But we can't afford to move somewhere more expensive, (rents have risen) and pauls wage is above minimum too.

If we needed help with the rent (and god forbid the job went), and the new housing benefit meant we had to cover a large amount of it, we would be screwed. Lips Sealed

Brownose is behind the general idea (he recently talked of making it better to work than to stay on the dole with housing benefit...).

OAPs alone in 3 bed council houses usually end up buying their council house to pass on to the kids... well actually it's the kids who push them to put in the paperwork and the kids make all the payments trying to get rich quick...

Most of us know that working is better than dole.... unfortunately life sucks and will often throw a spanner in the works that means you have to have help, especially if you were on minimum wage to start with and couldn't save, or numerous other factors.

Making it harder won't just penalise the fraudsters, it also badly affects the genuinely needy and thier families.

Want to emigrate when i win the lotto....  Angry

It'll take more than that £5 win to get you to NZ.....

Thatcher let workers buy their council houses 'cos it meant they HAD to work or lose their home...

This is Brownose's interpretation of the same thing... this and "shared equity".

Another thing he has up his sleeve is for when people are unable to pay their mortgage... they will get the right to rent it off the mortage provider... but will probably never get to own the place outright.

I'm guessing brownose doesn't realise that most councils have sold off a lot of their stock? and that priavte landlords don't have to let you buy.

They need to build millions of council homes for this to work..

Money from the sale of ALL council houses is still languishing in bank accounts... Maggie had a purpose for it but left before she could say what... New Labour are keeping the cash quiet and ready for another purpose... bribes probably...

"Council houses" are still being built in Cardiff... but the only "council" thing about them is that they are built on "council" land GIVEN to builders. They are sold privately except for a few which are used for "special persons" for around 5 years.. then sold privately...

France is attacking the problem of a lack of "social housing" by allowing builders to build-to-rent... the properties can never be bought by tenants, and new tenants are vetted (for need and wealth). Rent is controlled, but still makes a tidy sum for the builders.

If your wages go above a certain level you have a set period before having to move out.... to stop "wealthy" people squatting on the properties... and many places are kept for primary workers (police, fire, ambulance, nurses, council employees, etc... but not teachers 'cos they are too well paid)

I have 2 mates working in the council HQ, 3 who are regularly in there for The Parents Association, and a councillor who hates having to toe the party line.

In France I have my BIL who is a Union activist and rep.
