DNA database legal battle
«

Two British men are due to appear before Strasbourg's European Court of Human Rights to try to get their DNA removed from the UK national database.
Both were arrested and DNA samples were lawfully taken. But the men were later cleared and have no criminal record.
Their lawyers will say that keeping the information infringes their right to privacy and anti-discrimination laws.
If the case is successful, tens of thousands of similar DNA records would have to be destroyed.
The DNA database, which covers England and Wales, currently contains around 4.5m profiles - routinely taken from criminal suspects after most arrests.
It is already the largest of its kind in the world but is controversial.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7266130.stm
Although I think that if everyone's DNA record was mandatory to fight crime and to identify bodies it would be a great tool, I also feel wary that such information could be misused if it leaked (or was sold) to Insurance companies. So I am stuck on this one.....

If you're innocent, your DNA samples should be destroyed. Fight crime? They have enough trouble fighting sleep.

Torn on this one - I think I'd be happy for my DNA to be kept on a database because I have nothing to hide BUT.....
ONLY if they can promise 100% to keep the information secure from ID thieves - and over the last few months they've proved that they can't by losing several computer files of this kind....
Until they can make the system watertight they should scrap it!

I think they should dump the DNA if you are innocent or not charged.
Basically for the same reasons that Nanaof2 gave.
The system will never be water tight

Only trouble with that is I wouldn't trust the authorities to keep it safe over here

Understood.
Question for you then- are you comfortable with them keeping copies of your fingerprints on record??

Fair enough.
I know that I don't have any DNA on record anywhere- but my fingerprints are on file with the FBI because I used to work for a bank.
Doesn't bother me either way.

There is a bit of difference between fingerprints and DNA though...
They have already lost my details and i have to keep an eye out for fraud (government not police) DNA is far more important.

But how are they going to use DNA for fraud? Frame you for murder?
Right now I can see how fingerprints- with today's imaging technology-could be used. But DNA?

Come on, todays crims are way ahead of the Cops. How long before they find a way to use it to subvert justice?

Oh I get that. Just find it hard to think of how they can use DNA wrong.

Didn't know the murder victim? Wasn't in the vicinityof the murder site? How long before they can prove you did, and you were?
