Oh, yeah, I remember taking part in a couple of balloon releases like that.

I used to put messages in bottles as well, when i was at the seaside, but never got a reply to these either.

Kid at Emma's school got a reply to their balloon release. The one that went the furthest and got returned got a prize and the replier got some vouchers sent for their trouble.
I can't remember how far it went though - not mega far.

they do that at our school too, one ended up in Germany i think.
