With Ofcom making changes to 0870 numbers in February 2008 we are seeing a massive migration to either 0871 numbers or 0844 numbers.  0870 numbers will no longer generate payments for the owner of the number.

 Historically carriers or resellers who sold the numbers would receive a payment for routing the call.  As the cost to call 0870 numbers is being reduced to fall in line with the cost of a National call so the outpayments finish.

I'm tempted to buy one - I could then get all the companies that want something from me to pay for the call instead of me sitting there like a dummy on an 0870 call... Maybe if everyone did that they'd get rid of them and go back to freefone numbers?

My family and friends, of course, know my mobile number, facebook link, and email addy so they wouldn't be penalised. But think of the joy you'd get knowing the GP, dentist, annoying double-glazing salesperson, etc ....having to pay to call you!

Too bad they don't have anything like that over here (the closest is the 900 area code, and they cost $2500 + 15% of all income).  All those surveys and politicians would make me a bundle...
