  I can see how some of it happens.  I regularly end up throwing a third of a loaf away, simply because I don't use it before it goes mouldy.  I'd freeze half of it, but I can't stand bread that's been frozen.

I am not keen on previously frozen bread, it is different in texture

bread now has ingredients to make it go off.  they used to feed it to pigs but they cant cos its mouldy

I`m guilty of chucking or giving  food away  Cry mostly because we just don`t have any shops around here so I tend to do a large weekly shop and make sure we don`t run out . Fine if there is room in the freezer but not so good otherwise
