...If so, is it normal for it to take upwards of an hour to format the system disk, with no noticeable movement on the progress bar?

after the download the whole lot took half an hour or so for me. (4200+ x2, 300g SATA hdd)
On reboot given dual boot option and into ubuntu pdq

Okay, Fred. Thanks for the info. I'm tempted to just go completely Linux, but I wanted to give the kids a taste of it first, and get them away from from Windows. Doesn't seem to be working for me, though.

yeah, that's Wubi, which is what I'm trying. My machine just won't have it. After it's all installed, I get a load of error messages, which are too fast to read, then it hangs.

i just bunged the disc on to see it by live cd, then installed

Dozens of error messages, but they're too quick to read. I'm just going to gamble, and install from CD I think. I'm sick of Billy Gates's bloatware, sucking up my resources like a big pink hog.

try live cd spite first to make sure all the vitals work.. internet connection is vital to get all the support and to access the repositories..
