Woah!

That is a seriously powerful machine!

The speed at which processing power is increasing is amazing. Have we started to near the upper limits of what speeds are possible yet? or are there no real limits with parallel processing?

I wonder how long before they finally build one of these things and it becomes self aware?

A few decades perhaps, or sooner?

That would have all kinds of serious philosophical and moral implications.

It would appear that at least one project to actively develop a self aware system is already in progress.

I would think enough people have seen the various "computer run amok" movies that there would be a. some kind of fail-safe and b. some sort of ethical imperative programmed into it.

Of course, such an imperative is no guarantee that it wouldn't run amok, but one would hope that a good "upbringing" would be as effective as it is on most people.

Just read a very good article on the possibility of sentient computers.

It can be found here:

  Yes.  It'd be called a switch.  Self-aware, doesn't mean self-modifying.

Yeah, that's what part A is.

I also think there's a very good chance that the first self-aware computer will go insane.

I don't think it would go insane.  I'd describe it more along the lines of dying in infancy.
