in another thread I mentioned probs after trying to install AVG8

looks like AVG is innocent.  the machine shows the signs of overheating. I've had the side off and hoovered, checked everything for security of fit etc.  no joy.

dug out the spare machine and it refused to pass POST. insisted that an IDE cable was missing.  cable is present and secure and not been touched since last used.

so dug out the laptop and good old IE failed to wrok for some reason.  again nothing changed since last use.  settings were all normal.

so found a download of firefox on an external HDD and finally got online.  just wroked out how to import my bookmarks from a back up copy on external HDD

AVG and any part of Panda antivirus clash like crazy... and some AVs steal bits of Panda in their program...
