Ok Linux boffins this is pi**ing me off !!
Every time I go to install a package I have downloaded (deb) to a folder on my desktop the package manager opens it and goes to install it fine THEN all blank !!
Yet if I open the package installer
click file
click open
select the given file it
install
it works
What the h*ll is going on ??
Had it with AVG free and Limewire (both deb packages, both now installed)
PS.....Apparently I dont have permission to update AVG though

When you say 'Package Installer', do you mean the 'Add Remove' thingummy, or the Synaptic Package installer?
Also, what type of file extension do these files have?

she means a .deb file
i don't have a problem installing them at all.. sounds like your installer maybe a bit borked..
as for avg i think you have to be root to update it, will search now to see how
personally i haven't bothered with constantly running antivirus.

I do. I need a firewall, too. Just because you're mostly invisible to Windows Computers, doesn't mean everyone else can't see you.

actually if you go to the sites that can scan all your ports, they will say that you are stealthy
also linux has an inbuilt firewall. you have to install firestarter from synaptic to be able to configure it though, personally i haven't bothered. It works no need to mess with it.

I think as more and more people migrate from Windows, (especially Vista!) it's going to become necessary, though.

why? are they going to break it
i agree that as more people use it the more some will try to hack it, but i'm not worried at all about it yet.
Not having to scan for anything is soooooo relaxing. I'll keep my eye on ubuntu forums to see what happens, but i reckon it will be a while before they create anything that can do any damage at all.

before you go all mental.. what the hell do you need a anti virus for?
there's like one virus for linux.. which isn't easy to get and it has a disinfect command..
and limewire sucks ass..
take frostwire at least.. or just go to the add/remove and install gtk-gnutella
and btw did you use automatix?

the only advantage to using an antivirus is to make sure you don't spread a windows virus to a windows user...
but that means scanning all the files you send.

Criminals are very eager to get around systems, these days. Especially those used by trusting, defenceless, and maybe a tad smug, people. If Linux can be compiled, it can be hacked. It's just a matter of time. Still, it's fun to laugh at the Windows, 'Special' Community, while we can, isn't it?

Because I'm cautious, and don't take tomorrow for granted.

In that case, no.
