Question for Ubuntu users.
«

As I type, I'm running Ubuntu from the Live CD. Now, under Windows, I had to install software from my ISP to get onto the net, but Ubuntu seems to have bypassed this... Or, is it a case of just reading the information it needs from the Windows partition on my Hard Disk?

what did you have to install in windows? As far as i am aware, an Ubuntu Live CD just runs from the cd, it doesn't access anything on the computer.
i didn't have to install anything with my net connection for ubuntu. I guess it depends on what method you use to connect. I know to take my ubuntu wireless ,i need to sort the drivers, but that is all.

Cheers, Gaffer. I've double checked to make sure, but that's what I hoped. Anyone want to take bets on how long it'll take me to break the computer?

the software you had to install on windows would have been drivers..
Ubuntu already got a crapload of drivers in it.. most people don't have to install any
live CD uses CD only
only things that might require (extra) drivers would be vid card (Nvidia, ATI) and some printer (not all.. mostly canon) and webcams sometimes..
oh yeah and wifi.. but dunno about that cos 7.04 has worked alot on wifi support so maybe that's good now

I'm getting more angry and frustrated with my own daftness, than with the operating system. I'm glad there's people here with sound advice, 'cause I've given up trying to talk to other Linux users, 'cause they seem to be annoying, angry, pedants, who want to keep it to themselves, but at the same time decry everything that's not Linux. I suspect a lot of them may be Goths...
