trying to sort father in laws lappy..

There appears to be a problem with the internet connection. It works fine, but when you start using it, a svchost.exe starts runing that uses the entire cpu usage. I've checked it out and it appears to be connected to netsvc (confirms it is net based)

System is a new windows install, with newly installed and scanned anti virus, spyware and adware stoppers.

What ever it is, this service is also interfering with windows updates, the only way i could get them on was to use firefox and 62nds.com
I updated i.e6 - ie7 in the hope that would fix it..
Nope

I can't run a scf /scannow as i don't have the correct discs
I've checked all running proggies doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary... but something is definately wrong.

If i stop the service (in task manager) it is fine, until i try to update..... then it starts back up again.

Any other suggestions? (can't put linux on, not my machine)

Could you clarify exactly what you mean by 'update'?  Update what?
