User Account Control (UAC) can help you prevent unauthorized changes to your computer. It works by prompting you for permission when a task requires administrative rights, such as installing software or changing settings that affect other users.

We don't recommend turning User Account Control off. If you do turn it off, you should turn it back on as soon as possible.
      1.
Open User Accounts by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking User Accounts and Family Safety (or clicking User Accounts, if you are connected to a network domain), and then clicking User Accounts.
2.
Click Turn User Account Control on or off.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3.
Select the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box to turn on UAC, or clear the check box to turn off UAC, and then click OK.

Kat passed me details of a great program: WinBubbles.

On page one of this great tool are 2 fantastic controls "Take control of this file" and "Take control of this folder". Possibly dangerous to use everywhere, so use with respect, but at least they allow you to modify things that Vista tries to protect annoyingly. It even lets you delete daft things like the sidebar, etc.

I'm now battling a well-known Vista bug... unable to rename new folders... it must have something to do with permissions/security or a registry error...

There is a very common bug in Vista that suddenly won't let you rename new folders from "New Folder" to whatever. I've tried very fix I could find so far, and eventually resorted to Unlocker Assistant... it renames on reboot.

The trouble is that the drivers for the hardware are all bespoke... Vistagh! only... many purchasers of this model (iMedia 2414) have been complaining to Packard Bell, but PB are adamant that no XP or other drivers will be written. I read on a forum that PB are in cahoots with M$ to force Vistagh! on the public.

Once I get the isopropanol alcohol from my garage to clean the proc/heatsink interface on my "old" PC I will pray that it works again so that I can go back to it as main machine... then Pol can play with this one....
