I have a whole load of files on my E Drive (logical on my first hard drive) that I have been moving, renaming, opening and deleting with no problem, then suddenly XP won't let me move, rename, delete, copy or open any of the files... stating "Access denied" or "Unable to open" in programs.

I can add other files to this drive and do what I want with them, it's only the original files that are denied access.

The files are not read only, not security encoded, only have the A (archive) attribute set. I have defragged, scandisked, even manual chkdsk /f.. but to no avail.

I'm sure it must be something to do with "permissions".

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

right then check to see if you have simple or advanced file sharing enabled.

If file sharing has been enabled/disabled then it might have done something to the security priveledges (thats just some god awful spelling)

failing that you could try booting up into safe mode a trying to delete them from there.  If they won't delete in safemode then it is something to do with permissions

Tried it.  No joy, so far.  It's only been the last few days, since Windows updated.

Apparently, I'm no longer the Admin on my own PC.  (No one else uses mine, either.  Or, at least, no one has in the last fortnight.)

it is a new security feature microsoft have brought in.  they are trying to copy linux by having users as users and implementing high priviledges if you need to do admin work.  in theory its stopping virus's from doing damage.

doesnt work though
