Bank customers face having to pay as much as £500 a year simply to operate a current account.

High-street banks are considering charging customers for every transaction, a system already used in Australia and the United States. That would mean the end of free banking in Britain.

Customers would be required to pay for each cash withdrawal, direct-debit payment, standing order or written cheque - as well as paying an annual fee for the account. According to Moneysupermarket.com, costs could be as much as £300 a year for the average customer who makes about 35 transactions a month, or up to £500 for anyone making more than 50.

Good thing such charges are waived by law for those on government benefits.

At least, over here, they are.

Of course, my bank doesn't charge for much, though they do have a few charges...

Pauls boss would pay cash, and i already pay most bills at the P.O. You can get some benefits paid through the p.o too.

They've got an damn cheek with the amount of profits they turn over every year

Now if it was the Mail, or the Express, it definitely wouldn't happen.  All they want to do is scare the bejesus out of their readers.
