Here's a little snippet I was just passed by a Carer colleague:

Carers will soon be able to work and not lose their Carer's Allowance.

But only if they are caring for an ELDERLY relative.

There are no plans to offer the same to Carers of handicapped persons.

Pensioners get an automatic Heating Allowance, handicapped persons do not and will not.

Pensioners can get cut-price heating bills, handicapped persons do not and will not.

I wanted to teach, for free, but HMG says that even if I charge nothing to teach OAPs how to use PCs and the internet, I will lose my Carers Allowance and other benefits too... something about voluntary work being classed as earnings even if you earn no pay.

Their heads are so far up each others backsides that they have forgotten what real life is about!

I may be wrong here, but wouldn't you be better off then if at least one of you worked?

Obviously you need a carer home because of the twins (if they are poorly etc...), but for the amount they pay you to be a carer (its not exactly a WOW figure) .. wouldn't you be better off gaining a wage?

Sometimes I say "Carer" to someone and they assume it's a 9-5 job with time off in the evenings, weekends, Bank Hols,  summer hols, etc.

If only that was the way  Undecided Sad

Professional carers that I have known for years take home over £1.2k pcm, get mileage allowances, training, support... and holidays...

An old friend does just 5 nights a week as "Night Guardian" in a communal home, or every weekend for a month, and brings home £1.6 pcm. Mind you, he hardly gets any rest whilst on duty, and always looks bombed in the mornings....
