wait till they start charging fees to have a bank account, as in a set amount a month, and you have to have x amount in there too.

when that happens i'll keep my pennies under my bed!

But you'll still have to have a bank account to get paid in the first place... cash payments will soon be deemed illegal by Brown (to stop the black economy and pay under the Minimum Wage).

This already happens, most banks charge for current accounts ... but you do get a load of stuff free that you don't actually want  Roll Eyes

Saying that ... I may upgrade to Natwests Gold Account as it will give me free travel insurance for all of us + free AA cover, so they are worth it for us.  Plus I want a loan soon and I will get a better rate, so I need to weigh up the costs over what I will be getting 'free'.

I have the free one at the moment.

I work it as ... I pay £11 a month for AA cover, the account is £12 a month but I will get free cover, free travel insurance and better interest rates.  So for me it will be worth it ... when my AA for the year runs out Wink

thats fair enough, it saves you money you'd be daft not to take it..

i think the optional "upgrade" for an account with a fee is fine. At least then there is a choice.
But I don't see how they can justify making it compulsory (i think i have heard they might), its not like they don't earn a massive profit.

They have been trying to push the Gold Account onto me for years ... in the past I have never had a reason to go for it and always turn them down ... even now I think £12 a month is a bit steep ... hence why I haven't changed over yet, will keep my free one till I am ready.
