The UK fishing industry is warning it faces ruin because of EU quotas which result in thousands of tonnes of dead fish being dumped back into the sea.

It says fishing crews often continue catching large amounts of fish, such as cod, by accident after exceeding quotas and have no option but to dump them.

EU commissioner Joe Borg acknowledges the problem but sees no clear solution.

No clear solution? Get rid of quotas perhaps?

The trouble is that a captain whose crew lands a holdfull of cheaper fish, will dump the lot if he then starts to catch more profitable fish, so they can't blame it all on quotas though.

Very true.  Many fishing boats are species specific, and will throw away anything else.

It's totally crazy, dumping them does absolutely nothing to preserve fish stocks as they are dead already, landing them and selling them would do more to preserve stocks as there would be enough being sold without going out for the quota

Plus the dumping causes localised pollution... right in their feeding/breeding grounds...
