The new GP contract in England has cost the government £1.76bn more than predicted in its first three years but productivity has fallen, says a report.

Practice partners now work seven fewer hours a week on average, but earn 58% more, the National Audit Office found.

Yup, and they have more and more incompetent, jobsworth admin staff to stall the sick from getting appointments before they feel better...

To be fair, the obstrocolous staff, are there to stop the timewasters.  A lot of people who take up GP's time, don't need a Doctor.

Our local admin staff put up posters:

If you have a headache/earache take paracetomol

If you have sore joints/muscles use ibrufen

etc

etc

and:

The doctor will not issue presciptions for over-the-counter medicines, please consult your chemist for advice.

...and a long list of chargeable services such as countersigning passport applications.... some services cost around £100!!

Yes, mine too.  I think it's to dissuade people from taking up their valuable golfing time.

One of our 4 GPs (2 locations to share the spoils of) spends most of his time in the BUPA hospital as an anaesthetist...

I think the main problems in Britain, with GPs, are too many people for too few Doctors, and the fact that the gap between rich and poor is increasing, with the richest folk drawing valuable personell away from the NHS.

The extra pay they're getting is also allowing many to retire from NHS GP work earlier and earlier... to spend more time in BUPA, etc...

I think we've just got to accept that our politicians want an American-style health system, where they have minimal responsibility.
