The Tories are exactly the same as Labour now.  Although, if they beat Brown in the next election, God knows how they're going to unravel the mess the economy's in.  The Child Tax Benefit Credit scheme alone, is a bottomless pot, and far too open to fraud.

A lot of families would.  But, a lot of single women work only for sixteen hours a week, when they could very well take on a full time job.  There's also a lot of two parent families that don't need it at all, and are deliberately restricting their working hours solely to qualify.

you have to work more than 30 to get the full benefit. you get less money if you work less than that.

Single parents don't.  In fact, they're told it's really not worth taking more than sixteen hours a week.  And I also know of two families where the main breadwinner is working a strict 37 hour week, and their partners are doing as few hours as possible to qualify.  It's a hard thing to quantify, though...  Are they defrauding the state, or just taking advantage of an opportunity?

I don't know anyone like that. Shocked

i've recently told two of our single childless friends, who work full time to apply.
They were under the misconception that it is just for people with kids. I think a single person (over 25) working full time has to earn more than 13000 to not get anything at all. Obviously couples can earn more.

yup, I know a lot who restrict their hours
but to be honest , I`ve never really understood it all . My kids are older now so all we ever got was child benefit and I think that himself claimed child tax allowance ? I dunno or that might have been married allowance.
so now if you have kids is it right that you get
child benefit
child tax credit
is there working family credit thingy too

gawd, I must have had my kids too early
seems this is open to all kinds of options for the bone idle and lazy

ps. When himself came out of work , we were told to apply even tho we had no dependant children but I did, I bloody waited on hold for ages , got the forms , filled them in and was more or less told to sod off  Lips Sealed
at that time we were living on only my wage  Lips Sealed

I know that if we didn't recieve it, we'd probably get council tax benefit and maybe housing benefit so it may well cancel itself out...
but to be honest even if i took them off our bill list and then took away the credit we recieved we would be worse off, and pauls not even on minimum wage.

Something has seriously gone wrong somewhere..... it does seem to be a bottomless pit, but i hope they don't take it away because they can't stop others from defrauding the system.

basically the tax credit replaces the child tax allowance and family allowance? ,marriage allowance? (not sure what one) too, obviously the amounts are higher and there are other additions too. But the cost of living has risen as well.

I remember as a kid my folks got family allowance at one point and it had to be reapplied for every six months, or was only allowed for 6 months or something.

The whole system seems crazy to me
take two of my nephews and nieces:
he is married to an epileptic , he is her carer , they live in a private rented house which is paid for by the council , no council tax either , they have two kids (one with special needs) now and they are expecting another child . He is  better off not working than working .
My niece has just got married and they have bought a house with a mortgage. They both work full time and have a child. She daren`t have another child because of the mortgage etc.
I remember having an argument with daughter once when she insisted that they would be better off separating and both being out of work . I told her that you MUST be better off working . I think she might have been right  Lips Sealed

I just can't see how it's sustainable for many more years.  It's a massive drain on the economy, and of course, all the more popular because it's a 'Credit', not a 'Benefit', which means a lot of people who are restricting their working hours to qualify, have more time to write their vitriol-filled letters about 'Scroungers', to the local evening paper.

If all that's on offer is repetitive, back-breaking menial labour, for minimum wage, then I suppose she was right.  You always have to take into account what sort of a wage a person can bring in.

she was right el.

we walk a fine line with the system ourselves, if the landlord ups his rent, we're screwed (not that he'd dare).

I don't know how people who earn minimum wage cope, hell i look back at the "bad" jobs and wonder how we did.

It's just stupid and makes no sense at all. I don't think the cost of living has risen that much in the last 10 years, has it?
I know our council tax has shot up, and energy is more expensive, but is there really that much of a difference?
