Unclaimed money from abandoned bank accounts will fund government plans for a "youth centre in every town".

Banks and building societies hold an estimated £15bn in unclaimed accounts and assets - such as funds that have not been claimed after the death of an account holder.

They say that any account untouched for 15 years will be used .... what if some old people somewhere put money into a savings account 15 years ago ready for retirement and haven't touched it since?
Will they get it back?

Surely they'd need a certificate of death to touch the account in the first place?

The funding - £184m of new money - will be supplemented with money taken from so-called "dormant" bank accounts, which have not been used for 15 years or more.

That's outrageous!  I know people who've invested a lump sum in a bank account and are leaving it to mature for twenty years or so.  Hmm, shall I tell them?

Some of the cash is bound to be leftovers from fraud or money-laundering...

Yeah, but it's tough luck if you've just put a lump aside for a rainy day.

I know some Czechs who "hide" money away in multiple accounts.... not that HMG doesn't know the accounts exist anyway....

I can believe it.  I know of a few economic immigrants who are finding out just how expensive it is to live here.

That's outrageous!  Lips Sealed

I've got a bit put by in an ISA for a rainy day, so by the sound of it, if I leave it to build up & it's seen as 'dormant' it could be emptied to go towards whatever worthy cause the government choose?Huh?

Disgusting.
