So I get a knock on the door... it's 2 neighbours who ask me if I have had any strange letters, phonecalls or visits by officials from the Social Security or whatever recently.
"Yup" I replied "Two home visits from the Social investigating reports that I was working whilst on Incapacity Benefit, and another one more recently investigating my whereabouts on certain dates... in or out of the UK. But I have never been on Incapacity Benefit, and time outside the UK was within the rules set out by the benefit system."
They explained that they too had received calls and visits from not just Benefit officers, but the DVLA regarding their vehicles. Totally unfounded accusations which they disproved easily.
One of the bloke's daughter-in-law works for in a benefit office and was surprised to see a whole bunch of "anonymous" accusations being made about people in our small area, 7 on his side of the road, and 5 on ours.... and her FIL was included!
She gave him the head's up... but he had already been visited and the accusation was disproved.
It seemed obvious to him that someone was trying to get us into trouble through false reporting. I said that I had a good idea who called about me.... and both my neighbours nodded and looked in the direction of his home.
They came back after a couple of hours with reports of more people being made the focus of investigations... 2 from Immigration, several by the DVLA, most by the DSS about benefits. And all false allegations.
They wanted all affected persons to pay him a visit together, but I backed down from that....
"We should all send letters of complaint to the relevant departments, demanding the identity of whoever is doing this. They won't give the identity of course, but they will be made aware of what he is doing, and perhaps take action themselves?"
They agreed to give that a try, but if nothing happens a certain neighbourhood busybody is going to get a visit... but not from me....

Too late...
3 neighbours are having a shouting match with the likely suspect on his doorstep... and he's obviously not denying that he is the culprit...
I'll get more info later no doubt.

Quite a few of those accused have been over to see him already... but he just stands on the doorstep blaming "layabouts, lazybones and immigrants" for his "meagre pension".... LOUDLY!!!
As the costy of living spirals, I can see a lot more people will be looking for whipping-boys to blame.....

Taf, I don't know if it's still the case, but folk used to get paid for information regarding benefit fraud. Maybe that's his game?

I don't get him at all... he's a retired civil servant (very low grade, very much lower than I was) and he normally keeps himself to himself.
The local area is very active this morning. People talking on doorsteps and curtains twitching. The first 2 who came to my house yesterday were visited by the community police officer and have given statements, but they haven't told anyone what was the cause of the police being called.

There is something in the water: as it is apparent that some people when they reach old age seem to change into bitter nosey parkers that never seem to stop complaining
Or even become so deluded that a small noise can in their minds turn into some form of explosive volume
Over the years (47) that we have lived in our house we have encountered 4 or 5 of these nuts

I'm up to date now... all those involved phoned various government departments this morning making formal complaints.... and most are now backing these up with formal letters of complaint. I have just made my 2 calls and have almost finished the letters.
More "victims" of his attentions have been found, and they too are going the way of formal complaints.
The community police office say that complaints are definitely the way to go, and that any vigilante actions will be taken very seriously. Even though he openly admitted making all the false reports, the police can do nothing.

I was expecting the police to do something too... but they don't see it as in the public interest to do any work...
