schools tend to be one union or the other as a whole ours is nearly all NAS/UWT with no NUT and one or two ATL.  NUT tend to be primary staff. with a litle care a school can be closed with few staff on strike.  In the 80's our place was closed for a succession of days with as few as six(out of 80+) well chosen ones on strike for half a day at a time.  the rest, of course were present and got paid.  NUT is looking for publicity here

To be fair, if the school can't provide a comprehensive educational service, why should he?

You don't think it is worth it for the hours they do?

Here's how it wroks

most, if not all do not start to earn till age 22+ due to the degree and PGCE required
attachment shows the scales

It takes six years to get to M6

then if they can satisfy
http://www.teachers.org.uk/resources/word/JNCTRE-JESC-143-2006-Annex2-UPS.doc

they move to the upper scale.

It takes at least six years to get to U3 from then

so to get to 34k takes at least 12 years as well as satisfying the above link.

In recent years the main scale has been condensed from 17 levels (usually took 17 years to get to the top of the main scale then).  yes, that's the route I took.

so in the vast majority of cases 23 years in were needed to get to 34k

I used to average 65 to 70 hours a week and even then did not manage to fit everything in.  you can only do so much.  In my case it turned out to be too much so it looks as if I earn for 27 years in total

when I finished my degree    most graduates' starting salary was in the range 7k to 8.5k.  in common with most teachers I did an extra year's course (PGCE) and started on 3.4k
