OMG! My Nan's father and brother were working in a mine near Redruth around that time. Not allowed to join the army for WW1 because they were in a Reserved Occupation.  :o

My great grandma my died a few years later, and my grandpappy was raised by his brother who moved them all to Wales to work the mines here..

My grandpappy died when my ma was 18,and her youngest sibling was 3.. it's a sad state of affairs all round.

So I've never met him, and it feels very odd referring to him as grandpa/father whatever.

I'm sure I've heard that he was born the night of the mine accident, then his ma died when he was two. But I dunno if thats accurate.

My maternal Nan was born in Cornwall, her Dad was too, son of a Cornishman and a Spanish lady he brought back after working in a Spanish stone quarry. No-one has ever been able to trace her family.

Nan's paternal Uncles all went to South Africa to work in gold and diamond mines, never married and never came back. Her only paternal aunt died very young.

She met a Cardiff policeman on seconded-duty in Cornwall, and he brought her back and they had 13 kids.  :o Her entire family in Cornwall vanished during WW2 or just before. No records have been found of them since.

Did your family get involved in the Tonypandy riots, in... er... IIRC 1910?

Not Winston's finest hours...

Not that I am aware of.  But it's not beyond the realms of possibilities as we are a gobby lot.  I think i'd have heard the stories though if there was active participation

I live relatively close to where that happened, frequently walk the route into the next town.

Yeah, I know. That's why I was curious.

Sometimes, I kinda wish I'd lived in past times, as long as I was rich. :)

To have been working class, back then, must've been hard. 'course, the bloody Tories want to bring all that back...

Almost all politicians are out for themselves... Party before country where it benefits them.

And that's a global problem, not just us.

Sack them all and restart.
