They dont have to be expensive ASJ - I believe this

 Yep, my Mum grows a lot of them that way, infact part of the patio is taken up with them :laugh:

Over here, bonsai trees go for a minimum of $20. 

A lot of what are sold as "inexpensive bonsai" (such as what you have) are actually shrubs rather than tree species.  I'm not interested in shrubs.  My interest has always been in Maples and Pines.  Unfortunately, they're outdoor varieties, which aren't suited for places like my flat.

I had a Japanese Maple bonsai for about 4 years until it just turned up it's toes one day and died. They're finickity bloody things but worth the effort.
