think of it as a main page.

We've had a portal for a long time, it is how i place the shoutbox where it is.
It can be used to put menus and block with information down the sides of a forum, along top and bottom, add articles, and other features too.

Personally I don't like the forum itself being cluttered with blocks down the side, so I opted for a front page instead.
