Will Google Kill Firefox?
« on: November 27, 2013, 21:27:47 PM »

Firefox's new, silent upgrade feature means that you rarely notice when a new version of the browser has been installed on your system.
A small message popping up in the corner is the only indication of the update, but it can be easily missed. Firefox is updated regularly there have been 16 separate updated versions released this year alone.

So, how can Firefox afford to pay for all of the software developers working on the browser, especially since they give it away for free?

Well, it turns out that Firefox make their money practically the same way that all other Internet companies do online advertising.

Every time you search for something in the Search box at the top right of the main Window, Firefox get a small slice of ad revenue.

Although there are several search engines available from the drop-down list in the Search box, the vast majority of Firefox's revenue comes from Google.

If Google didn't provide this money, then Firefox would probably cease to exist.

At the moment, it seems that advertising revenue from Google will continue to pay for new Firefox versions, but the web is littered with widely used projects that Google used to support Google Reader for example but which they dropped, leaving millions of users without a product or service that they found useful.

So, could they do the same with Firefox? Well, initially it probably seemed like a good idea for Google to support a rival to Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. But now Google have a browser of their own Google Chrome and they could theoretically decide to stop funding Firefox, which would probably lead to millions of new Chrome users.

Google and Firefoxs developer Mozilla might be fairly friendly at the moment, but a new rivalry is emerging between the two.

Mozilla have recently released Firefox OS, a mobile phone operating system that competes directly with Google's Android.

If Firefox OS starts to take off, it will generate some extra profits for Mozilla, but possibly at the expense of Google's support for the Firefox browser.

Let's hope not though. Firefox has proved to be a secure and high performance browser for many years. It would be a shame if Google were given the power to kill it.

That's what's happened to Opera. Opera is, now, Google Chrome and it's crap. I'll stick with Opera v12, until I have no choice but to ditch it.

I've been road-testing PaleMoon, WaterFox and IceDragon, for the last few months. Not sure if they can stay entirely independent of Firefox, though.

I don't search with Google and I refuse to do so.

I abhor Google with a passion.

When they finally ARE the internet, we're screwed.

Firefox has killed itself for me, locking all the programs on the PC whilst it accesses pages with a lot of multimedia or pics.

I've migrated to Chrome to try it out a bit more than I have in the past.

Try Palemoon and/or Waterfox, Tf, if you want to stick with that engine.

I'm quite getting into Lunascape, at the moment.
