Ginger

For years, I have coveted a ginger plant. Last month, I though, blow it, I'll try growing one myself...

I potted up a small tuber of ginger bought from the supermarket, watered it, and left it in the summerhouse.

Checked on it about every 3 days.... no signs of life, until... The day before I went on holiday I spotted a small green bud on the side of the tuber.

I stood the pot in water in the sun, left it there and went on hols.

Checked back on Sunday... it had grown a shoot about 5" long! No leaves, just a shoot...

Today checked again... it now has a leaf at the top and is a good 6" tall so far. Will take a pic next time I go down to the summerhouse - didn't have my iphone on me today.

I googled ginger plant... the variety of flowers is amazing! Will be fun waiting to see which one I have!

:D

A ginger root left on a sunny windowsill will quickly form buds. I grew Galangal (Thai ginger form) for a few years until the cold got to it. I wish I had a heated conservatory. But they don't like bright sunlight though, but love water, but not too much! :-\

I've grown it without much fuss on a kitchen windowsill.  It does grow fast, though.
